Sir Gareth Ludlow, Corinthian, decides it's time to marry. He was about to get married seven years ago to a beauty named Clarissa, but suffered a loss when she passed away in an accident. However, instead of selecting one of notable beauties, he offers for Lady Hester, a sensible spinster. However, on the way to propose to Lady Hester, Sir Gareth encounters Amanda, a young pretty girl who is running away from her grandfather, to reunite with her fiancee, a soldier. Sir Gareth sees the danger of Amanda being unattended and feels that it is his duty to make sure she is safe. However, Amanda, doesn't appreciate being controlled, and her plans upset, tries to escape by inventing stories that puts everybody around her in danger.
On the other hand, Lady Hester shocks her family and Sir Gareth himself by turning down his proposal. Her family thinks she will be doomed to be a spinster, but she's quite sure Sir Gareth doesn't love her.
Besides, Sir Gareth has brought this beautiful Amanda to her house, which reminds her of Clarissa, so, how could she compete then?
